Toyota targets Arene software in 10 million vehicles a year by 2030

Toyota expects its Arene software platform to reach 50 models by 2030. The automaker also aims to use it in 10 million new vehicles each year.

Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima outlined the targets at an investor briefing in Brussels last week.

A Toyota spokesperson shared the details with Reuters. Toyota also plans to expand Arene’s use toward 2035. That rollout could include vehicles from alliance partners.

Toyota first introduced Arene in its latest-generation RAV4, launched in 2025. The platform helps Toyota develop vehicle software, including safety, multimedia and connected features.

Why automakers are focusing on software

A software-defined vehicle relies on software to manage and improve many of its features.

For example, automakers can deliver some updates over the air. As a result, drivers may receive refinements or new capabilities without visiting a dealership.

However, available updates depend on each vehicle’s hardware and the feature involved.

Toyota’s target would put Arene across a large share of its lineup. In turn, a shared software platform could help the company develop and update features across more models.

Still, Toyota must make those systems work reliably across different vehicles and markets. It must also meet the safety standards drivers expect.
